Lê Trung Hoa cho rằng “Cần Giờ” bắt nguồn từ tiếng Khmer, “Kanchoeu” nghĩa là “cái thúng”.

Tác giả như Lê Hương, dẫn lại theo Trương Vĩnh Ký, liệt kê các tên gọi theo tiếng Khmer của Cần Giờ như Păm prêk cơn kancơ [Vàm rạch cơn kancơ], Srôk phnar kanco [Sóc phnar kanco].
